Strong early morning winds at Soling Worlds on day 2

Soling World Championship - Strong early morning winds at Soling Worlds on day 2
BALATON, HUNGARY-(20-5-2003) In the morning the wind blew around Bft 6. Most of the boats hasn’t undertake this challenge. Despite of this, for the start the northerly wind lightened a little and moved between Bft 3-5 during the race.

The leeward start seemed to be good, Winkler started on the best position, but the middle of the field appeared, as they would begin to come up a bit. Finally we realized that it just appeared, as the German Winkler arrived first to the mark. The leader group arrived after him, in the following order: Auteried (AUT), Antoncic (SLO), Wossala (HUN), and Pichugin (UKR).

In the very fickle wind (both the direction, and the strength) the order at the front fleet changed a couple of times. Antoncic (SLO) could start the last downwind section on the first place, followed by Pitchugin (UKR) and Winkler (GER).

The last upwind brought a huge fight between the Ukrainian and the Slovenian boat. The Ukrainian worked off his disadvantage from centimetre to centimetre and in the finishing section he led, although his advantage wasn’t bigger as a whisker… Winkler arrived on the 3rd place, Wossala on the 6th Gyenese on the 8th.

Race 4
`We started on the windward side and led the fleet for a short period of time`, György Wossala said. `I told you how it happened. There was a very lucky situation in the first upwind section, where everybody thought they have to choose the shore, but the left tack was much positive than the other. In the meantime a wind came from east, so we pulled out there, that’s how we’ve got the leader position.`

The second upwind wasn’t really good, as we pulled the eastern side together with Pitchugin, and it did not worth… Maschkiwitz, Winkler and Auteried left us both there on the way to north, while they received a 20-30 degree strengthening wind. So we felt back onto the 6th place, and climbed back from here.

It was a very interesting, and varied race, and the 3rd position makes me really happy.

(Finishing this race, there were 3 hungarian boats in the top ten. The moment of the truth just arrived for Farkas Littkey and his team, so they could catch the 5th place. Balázs Gyenese finished on the 9th place.

Winkler won the 4th race, in front of Pichugin, and Wossala. After they finished the race in Balatonfüred the wind strengthened back, so the high pressure showed it’s genius. So tomorrow the wind will be even stronger than today.)
